At six years old, watching a stock car race on television ignited his passion, which led to attending a race at Martinsville Speedway in 2006. As a teenager, Byron honed his skills on the iRacing simulator, achieving impressive results with over 100 virtual wins and 298 top-five finishes.

Legend Car Debut

In 2012, Byron and his father decided to explore opportunities for him to race real cars. He began racing Legends cars at the age of 15, which is considered relatively late compared to many modern drivers. Despite starting later, Byron quickly excelled, winning 33 races in his first year and becoming the Legend Car Young Lions Division champion.

JR Motorsports Late Model Program

In 2014, Byron joined JR Motorsports’ late model program while continuing to race Legends cars. He drove the No. 9 Liberty University Chevrolet for JRM at Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina. During that season, Byron secured one victory and achieved 11 top-five finishes, ultimately finishing second in points to his teammate Josh Berry at Hickory.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series East

To prepare him, KBM entered the No. 9 truck for him in the 2015 Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway. Byron’s 2016 season started with a crash on the final lap at Daytona, resulting in a 13th-place finish, followed by an engine failure at Atlanta, placing him 32nd. He secured his first top-three and top-ten finish in the Truck Series with a third-place result at Martinsville.

However, he was later assigned to the No. 24, while Chase Elliott moved to the rebranded No. 9 car. Byron inherited Kahne’s No. 5 team, including crew chief Darian Grubb. In October 2018, Chad Knaus took over as Byron’s crew chief for the 2019 season. Byron clinched the Rookie of the Year award after the penultimate race at ISM Raceway.
